Seeka has always been a company that’s done things differently. In fact our journey started in 1980 in the small rural township of Te Puke when a group of kiwifruit orchardists saw an opportunity to generate better returns from their kiwifruit.
By following their vision, Seeka has grown to become the largest producer of kiwifruit in New Zealand and Australia, and a major provider of supply chain services that’s delivers the very best produce to an ever-growing range of global consumers.
For more than 35 years, by selecting excellence Seeka has been helping more growers, deliver more produce to more markets.
Our business is founded on relationships. The first step was taken in 1980 when Te Puke kiwifruit growers teamed together to generate better returns from process-grade kiwifruit in the newly-formed company International Kiwifruit Distributors Limited – IKDL.
Similarly, in 1983 growers wanting to improve coolstore management formed Kiwifruit Coolstore Limited to lease and manage the AFFCO coolstore complex at the Port of Tauranga.
In 1987 these two enterprises decided to join forces and the new company Seeka Corporation Limited was born.
By 1990, at Seeka we were focused on growing futures, and we expanded our services to kiwifruit growers by offering a new orchard lease operation and purchasing our first kiwifruit packhouse Transpack at the Maketu Corner.
The Ranui coolstore and packhouse was also purchased in 1990, and the company continued to grow with the purchase of the Berry post harvest facilities in 1994.
During the 1992 crash in kiwifruit returns, Seeka’s team of inspirational people led a strong period of rationalisation, and in 1995 purchased Kiwifruit Industries Limited from the Brierley Group to emerge as Seeka Kiwifruit Industries Limited; a larger, stronger company ready to grow with a resurgent industry.
Now a publicly-listed company, Seeka had the systems, resources and a safety focus that led a rapid expansion phase. The addition of Waimapu, Eleos, Bridge Cool, Peninsula and Huka Pak grew our size and geographical reach.
We also began developing a new orchard-to-market operation for avocados that delivered a better service to major Australasian retailers, and higher returns to New Zealand growers.
When the vine-killing disease Psa struck in 2010, being independently ingenious, the Seeka team went to work to support growers through tough growing conditions, while adding new products and services that built off our expertise in supply chain management.
This included kiwiberries the purchase of a major Australian fruit producer that added pears, apricots, plums and cherries to Seeka’s product range.
In just over 35 years, by selecting excellence Seeka has grown to become New Zealand’s largest kiwifruit grower, and an expert in supply chain management that is delivering New Zealand’ best produce to a growing range of international markets.
We have also spread our operations in New Zealand to become a large handler of imported bananas and other tropical fruits, while also becoming Australia’s largest producer and supplier of kiwifruit and Nashi pears.
By October 2016, our company implemented the clearer Seeka Limited name and a new brand that expresses our commitment to a growing range of stakeholders.
By following our core brand values, Seeka is your opportunity to select nothing but the best; it’s your place in the world to select excellence.
