Frankly Speaking

Frankly Speaking - week 24
21 June 2021

Welcome to this week’s Seeka grower and stakeholder update. With under 500k trays remaining to pick and the canopies empty we need fine weather so we can draw the 2021 harvest to a close. We are extremely grateful to our crews and contractors who are helping us to complete the harvest. You are more than appreciated.

Operationally Seeka has shipped 60% of our SunGold inventory and 46% of the Hayward inventory. In the organic category 60% of the SunGold inventory and 40% of the Hayward inventory have also been shipped. It’s remarkable noting the disruption caused by the Port closing due to weather events and the ongoing container shipping issues. The reefer vessel shipping programme which Zespri has now extended means that there is dedicated shipping for the NZ kiwifruit programme to the main markets of Europe, Japan, China and Korea. In the absence of comprehensive sales reporting, we can only hope that the fruit is selling.

The supply of kiwifruit to China continues to be an issue which is getting some focus by the industry groups. There is the likelihood of a premium being paid to growers for fruit that has market access, which is OK china – and it could be as much as $1.00 per tray. In order to supply China, we really need fruit that is scale free and being scale free provides the advantage to Seeka having some flexibility in where we can ship your fruit, when.

As you all know at the end of last year there was a hail event in the Nelson region. This event has resulted in a review of your hail policy and the cover provided by the National pool. In July the KGI forum will be asked to consider making this policy apply to this year’s crop. The council is not in support of this change being applied retrospectively, but has acknowledged the challenges for those growers who were impacted by hail this year and in prior years.

Finally, “supplierland” seem to be the only ones focussed on completing the harvest, everyone else in the Industry is focussed on talking about the Producer Vote. Good luck and happy voting.
