Welcome to our week 30 update. Thanks to our Bay of Plenty Growers who turned out in record attendance to our 'After 5 Roadshows' through Katikati, Tauranga and Te Puke. You are most appreciated and we will catch up with the Edgecumbe, Ohope, Opotiki and Peninsula Growers in the next few weeks.
Growers were interested to hear about the current year kiwifruit performance, the early OGR predictions and Seeka’s enquiry to Kiwifruit New Zealand to confirm that the mechanisms operating within the kiwifruit industry in relation to taste and the minimum taste standards were legal.
There was good debate amongst growers including feedback on the maturity testing, both the issue relating to the industry having a single independent lab and secondly how Seeka Growers pool maturity testing charges. Questions were raised about why the Hayward category has the same percentage share of its crop sold in higher paying markets in a low volume year as compared to last year, a high volume year. Growers rightly expected that the proportion sold in the higher paying markets would have naturally increased as we prioritised those markets. There was discussion on NIR and questions about Seeka’s forward capital programme. Seeka outlined its plans to install a second NIR capability at either Huka Pak or Main Road, to service our growers.
While the safety incidents are low there has been a rise in reported incidents in the orchard with dust or foreign bodies in eyes a common theme, even with appropriate eye wear. Flushing at the point of detection is important to avoid irritation. Sun strike is an issue when driving North late in the day, people are asked to be vigilant.
Operationally 84% of the industries Gold 3 crop has now been shipped, with approximately 8 million trays remaining to be shipped, we are now entering into the final phase of shipping and the majority of this crop will be fully shipped over the next 5 weeks. The Gold3 shipping programme will be finished at a similar time to last year. In Hayward Conventional the industry is 57% shipped which compares to 48% last year, the amount shipped this year is 7 million trays behind last year at the same time. The industry Hayward Organic crop is 68% shipped compared to 56% shipped at the same time last year, 330K trays less shipped than the same time last year.
