Welcome to our update to 5 November. Kiwifruit continues to perform brilliantly in 2017. We are down to the last 214k trays of Hayward in store with around 2 weeks to go to complete. Our fruit loss and in market quality continue to be excellent. And so the remarkable year continues, who would have predicted that we would be at week 44 with less than 1% fruit loss.
No one needs me to tell them that the weather has seemingly frustrated pollination. Thankfully the weather today is fine and warm. There has been increased incidence of PSA, with leaf spotting, flower drop and some exudates prevalent. However the recent application of Ambitious has seemingly allowed the Hayward plants to flush and grow through some of their earlier symptoms. Let’s see how we go. Flower numbers are thankfully better than last year – so in spite of the increased incidence of PSA – we are still optimistic about harvest 2018 at this stage.
Access to Pollen is really important now. Our Pollen mill is underway and the team is in production. The new milling operation can handle high volumes of flowers, delivering excellent yields. The team has constructed a deal that rewards growers with good returns for the flowers they supply, a high percentage of their pollen back to them and a small amount into the pool for the benefit of everyone. I would ask and encourage you to make your surplus Hayward male flowers available to us for picking and pollen production.
A reminder that we require you to enter your 50% flowering date into the grower website please. Any questions call your CRM.

The team has packed 77,422 trays of avocados with some 54,000 trays sent for export already. Markets are strong particularly in our key export market Australia which Seeka sells to in addition to Japan and for the first time South Korea in 2017. We are anticipating good returns for export fruit this year, predicting between $35 and $45 per export tray. Truly a phenomenon.
It’s not too late to join us for the Growers Ladies Long Lunch under the vines this Wednesday in Katikati with our guest Peta Mathias. Call Briar on 5730303 today to confirm your space.
Kind regards,
Michael
