Frankly Speaking

Frankly Speaking - Week 41 Update
17 October 2017

The remarkable fruit keeping year continues. Hayward fruit loss at Seeka of 0.72% [less than 1 percent] at week 41. Particularly with the harvest issues, dry matter complexity and delays, and weather interrupting harvest timing. Some sizes in some lines are turning as is expected, but still the loss is low and there are good loadouts in front of us to minimise the forward loss rate. Baring disaster we are looking forward to a good close noting that more than half of the remaining inventory will be gone in the next two weeks.

Our attention has turned to kiwifruit flowering. Bud break was excellent and there was euphoria at the break in both Hayward and SunGold. More recently there have been reports of flower drop in SunGold that has made us a little more circumspect about the flowering. While there is no known reason for it, some growers are suggested that it is expressing in some orchards that had very high yields last year. There remains a lot to learn.

There has been pressure from PSA in some regions, in some plants and in exposed orchards with high rainfall.

A number of growers have responded with acceptances for Seeka to be able to harvest male flowers from their orchards. Having a pollen bank supports all growers, so thank you to those of you that have made your orchards available.

The kiwifruit claim is in its last two weeks, with closing arguments next week. It has been a fascinating and revealing process to test whether the Crown was negligent in its Biosecurity and Border Control and whether the Crown can be sued and are liable for losses should it be found to be negligent. Certainly it has helped us understand what actually happened that lead to the outbreak and what should never have happened. Through accountability we will get a better border control and an outcome that ensures that the chance of repeat disaster is minimised. A decision by the Court is not expected before May next year.

Minimum dry matter enquiry

We have received provisional notification from KNZ that they have not upheld Seeka’s enquiry into the legality of the changes to the dry matter thresholds for Hayward. We are just reviewing the response, and have sought some advice and will make the final decision available to you. Seeka takes the advocacy role of its growers seriously and believes it has acted in Hayward growers best interests in making the enquiry and will come back to you when we have had sufficient time to digest and masticate it.

Kind regards,
Michael
