Frankly Speaking – Week 17 Update
Please accept this report to the end of week 17 [Sunday 27 April].
The green conventional first-past-the-post and contract allocations is almost behind us with week 18 being the final week of that programme prior to the start of main-pack clearance criteria. The recent weeks have been weather interrupted however to date the rain has not really impacted on our operations to any great extent. We expect this early part of the season to be somewhat interrupted but we have successfully marshalled our picking and packing around the weather events. New Zespri labelling standards have slowed our packing operations particularly in green organic meaning that our automatic grading systems have not been able to be used on this fruit.
Some Suppliers have not been able to meet their Zespri quota through these early weeks and have given up their share. Besides meeting our own commitments, Seeka has picked up a share of these shortfalls believing that it’s in the interest all of our growers to get as much fruit as we can behind us before heading into mainpack. Currently we have enough scheduled trays to fulfil our week 18 requirements.
Green organics have also had a very successful start. We have packed some 35% of the industries early start fruit in spite of us having an estimated market share of only 28%.
The G3 harvest will be completed this week and G14 was completed some weeks ago. This means that apart from a small number of GK and GL maturity areas our Bay of Plenty capacity will all become available for the green mainpack harvest. We are also prepared to go 24 hour packing as required. We already have some early brix’s in the 6-7 range and more are starting to kick on stimulated by colder nights.
There have been no safety incidents to report to you. However the pressure will now build as we open all capacity and lengthen the hours. Understandably people will get tired given the commitment required to get the job done for our growers. Please be vigilant. No one will complain if you prevent an accident or injury.
