Frankly Speaking

Week 26 - Week ending 30 June 2019
1 July 2019

Week ending Sunday 30 June

Welcome to this week’s edition of our grower update – bringing you the latest grower and industry . The big of the moment is the reinstatement of pre-clearance for New Zealand avocados being exported to Australia. The ability to pre-clear avocados to Australia was removed last year creating turmoil in the supply chain and markets. Thankfully this is reinstated until 30 April 2020, and we hope the trade negotiators are working to extend it permanently. Overall the Australian avocado market remains a bit soft, and the New Zealand market volatile – with really only the large sized fruit commanding good prices.

In the world of kiwifruit, the industry has packed 147m trays of class 1 fruit compared to 155m trays last year.  Fifty percent of the crop has now been shipped and we remain satisfied with the fruit quality. Inventory monitoring has shown pressure variations within lines of Gold3 fruit in store, which the team are managing. Next week we have Seeka people in market who will be looking at our fruit and how it is performing. With harvest complete and the submit volume confirmed, for Hayward it is crucial that market allocations are optimised and supply to the lower returning markets is shortened up, load outs remain smooth and programmes are planned to finish tidily to avoid end of season quality issues that were experienced last year. Our attention has turned to Zespri, and the Seeka Grower Council has asked for better transparency of market allocations, stock levels and pricing so it can understand where your fruit is being sold and for how much.

The Seeka app has now revolutionised the transparency that growers have about their fruit performance in the Seeka supply chain – you can see your fruit performance in store, the volume loaded out, the volume checked and lost. Increasingly our growers are migrating to the Seeka app to see how their fruit is performing. We will update you on our latest innovations at the upcoming After 5 events.
