Week ending Sunday 25 AugustWelcome to our latest grower update – updating you on the latest Seeka and Industry . Last week, Zespri announced their first fruit return forecast for the year. Seeka had given growers an insight to its prediction at our recent Grower After 5pm Roadshows and quite rightly growers asked us how accurate our predictions were with the limited information from Zespri in the sales reporting. As promised a comparison is provided in the table below:
It needs to be stressed that these forecasts were really an attempt to predict what returns would come from the market. The reality is that we have understated the per tray returns for Hayward and SunGold. In the case of Hayward conventional our per hectare predictions were pretty close. Our read of the limited information available is that the returns from the market to date are lower than last year, but quality a lot better and later season price increases continue to assist. SunGold has benefited from a greater proportion of its fruit sold in Asia along with good quality and strong demand. And Hayward organic – well what can we say. The latest Zespri information is now being converted into individual grower forecasts for each of the maturity areas for every orchard. Operationally the kiwifruit season is running to plan, 90% of the SunGold inventory is now either shipped or on order. With 1.3m trays remaining to go, Seeka’s fruit loss quality continues its remarkable run. There are nine weeks of shipping left for the SunGold and this programme is running five weeks later than last year. The Hayward conventional fruit is 72% shipped and ordered and due to the low level of fruit loss across the industry there is more supply which Zespri is likely to allocate to Europe. The industry full season fruit loss estimate has been reduced from 1.75% to 1.6%. The Hayward organic programme is 85% shipped and ordered with another nine weeks of shipping left to go, the full season fruit loss is estimated to be 1.3%. All in all, the team is pretty satisfied with the quality and fruit loss results. To the numbers: Seeka Aongatete
