Seeka this week updated the Seeka Growers Council on the Hayward fruit loss which currently stands at 5.31% compared to Industry average 1.74%. There are still 1.3m trays in store.
Seeka has investigated the cause of the losses and its current best information is that the cause is related the Oakside fire and issues arising out of remediation of storage bins at the site, which appear to have been contaminated during the event and remained contaminated in the subsequent cleaning and remediation process. A cause report has been prepared and has been peer reviewed with reviewers confirming the findings in the report. Seeka believes the event to be covered by insurance and is in discussions with its insurers over a claim for the loss on behalf of itself and its growers.
While there is no absolute certainty about the acceptance of the claim by insurers, it believes and understands the claim to be robust.
Seeka Growers have appointed a Grower Committee to work with Seeka on behalf of Growers. This committee comprises Debbie Oakley, Stewart Moss, John Griffin and John Bourke and this Committee has already begun receiving its reports.
We expect to be able to update stakeholders more specifically next week at the Stakeholder Meeting to be held on Wednesday 21 October at Stadium Lounge, Baypark, Truman Lane commencing at 3.00 pm. We welcome your attendance. Please RSVP to Anne Moir at anniem@seeka.co.nz or by phone 07 5750303 for catering purposes.
