Frankly Speaking

Frankly Speaking - Week 26
4 July 2018

The recent fine weather has enabled winter pruning crews to get busy in the orchard. The winter activities have also added a whole new risk and safety profile to our operations, wires, loose cane, sharp tools, uneven ground and moving vehicles all add to the new risk profile outside the pack-houses. Please be safety focussed.

The market reports are arriving, and while it’s early, it seems it’s not all plain sailing. At week 24, Hayward conventional volumes sold are 100k trays ahead of the same time last year with 10m trays more to sell than at the same time last year.  Hayward organic is 100k trays ahead of last year but with 500k trays more to sell than the same time last year. SunGold volumes are 1.8m trays ahead of same time last year with 7.9m trays more still to sell than the same time last year.  Pricing for all categories is good, but in each there is still away to go.

Generally, we are satisfied with the fruit in store performance. While losses are low, it’s not the same inventory as the last couple of years and there a few lines requiring care and attention. The orders are a little slow and Zespri has been recently moving to place class 2 packed for Zespri on the local market [Green and Gold], as class 2 market allocations are moved to class 1 fruit.

To the numbers [week ended midnight 1 July 2018]:

High Court Judgement in the Kiwifruit claim

Our appreciation to the Claims Committee [John Cameron, Bob Burt, Grant Eynon and Stuart McKinstry], litigation funders – LPF, and Lawyers Lee Salmon Long – for a fantastic result. The primary sector owes you a debt of gratitude.
