Week ending Sunday 17 May 2020
Welcome to this week’s edition of Seeka’s update to its growers and stakeholders, bringing you the latest industry and Seeka .
The Hayward (green) harvest is slow. Fruit maturities are behind expectation, brixes are accumulated at half of their expected rate and this combined with high dry matter levels creates a relatively immature piece of fruit. The warm nights, until recently, means that the fruit has not acclimated and isn’t prepared for storage. There is a lot of capacity in the system, we have controlled atmosphere storage ready, and there isn’t any real anxiety to get the crop off. At this stage we are running shorter shifts.
Seeka’s technical team have been putting together excellent crop analysis for Hayward and they will share an example of this tomorrow with growers over zoom at 4pm. If you would like to attend this virtual meeting and haven’t received an invite, please talk to your client relationship manager.
Fruit is continuing to load out through the stores well and without issue. And our off shore quality results look good. No issues to report at this stage with our inventory.
Last week Seeka recruited over 260 RSE workers from the apple industry in the Hawkes Bay. They are now being trained in winter pruning and available to undertake winter work on our orchards throughout our catchment. This initiative will ensure that we have the resourcing at an efficient rate to undertake our winter work.
Grower payments at the end of the month are going to be a little late and in two parts. Essentially the Zespri Board meeting is on a late date, they have to approve the final distribution, and there isn’t enough time to process the payments in time to get them all out to you before month end. Growers will receive payments on Friday 29 May and Friday 5 June. While we apologise for any inconvenience caused, we don’t set the Zespri Board meeting dates. We did ask Zespri to consider approving this payment out of session, but the date is the date it seems.
Finally the Seeka Growers Council has been meeting weekly through the later part of the harvest receiving regular operational and market updates. Reports back from Zespri remain good and sales are going to plan. Zespri also updated the Council on the foreign currency position and on a significant investment being undertaken by Zespri to upgrade their computer systems.
