Frankly Speaking Week 28 Update [Sunday July 17]
In spite of main-pack completion, there remains a lot of activity and pressure in the business and industry. Winter pruning is well underway and having to make the best of any fine days they get. I was reflecting over the weekend that Orchard Managers, Contractors and Workers barely get a break as they immediately work through the winter to prune the orchards and undertake new grafting. Temperatures have taken a step downwards at long last, something that orchardists will applaud but orchard workers no doubt despise.
Orchard owners need to be aware of the new Health and Safety legislation which establishes the principles of Person Conducting a Business Undertaking [PCBU]. Under the legislation there are new penalties that apply should there be a safety incident and the officer or PCBU has not taken all reasonable steps to ensure the safety of those in their business or on their orchard. There is also a change in focus from hazard identification to risk assessment. Orchard owners are required to comply with the legislation. It’s another step up the ladder in ensuring people that operate in or visit our businesses are safe. Seeka is now making simple changes in its orcharding business to ensure that we lift our on orchard safety practices. Initiatives like identifying hazards or no go areas on orchard maps are simple measures that can improve safety.
If you are interested further in the safety changes then please talk to your Client Relationship Manager, if there is enough demand we will schedule a safety briefing for you with our Safety Manager.
Our fruit inventory continues to perform well. SunGold is performing excellently, losses are low and time related income is accumulating nicely in the pool. SunGold in market fruit performance has been excellent. In Hayward conventional and Hayward organic, it remains early days. Fruit loss and in market performance is at the industry average and unremarkable. Its early days in the time pool with Hayward and so far so good.

Important AnnouncementIt is with regret [but also great admiration] that I announce the resignation of Bryan Grafas from Seeka.
Bryan has worked at Seeka for over 27 years and been with the Company since the very early days. He has led our orchard division and grown it to be the largest kiwifruit orchard operation in New Zealand. Seeka enjoys many great relationships that are founded on relationships with Bryan. And in many ways the culture of the company, how it responds to its people, clients and situations have been developed with a lot of input and influence from people like Bryan. He is very well respected.
Bryan is leaving us to pursue his own business interests and leaves by his own choice. After such a length of time it is quite an emotional decision to leave – but he is very happy with the Company, and justifiably very proud of it, and simply he is leaving to go and pursue other things.
His last day will be 16 September with the 15th being the date of his farewell function with details to follow later.
And Bryan will remain contracted to Seeka for a period to ensure a smooth transition.
